Watch for the existence of a reverse tiller gear is there, it is very useful for U-turns and blockages (buried rock, stump, large root).
Motorization: to look closely
Use engines from known manufacturers, guaranteeing reliability and the possibility of maintenance / repair / change of parts. These include Honda, Briggs & Stratton.
Monitor the power, which must be adapted to the use you intend for the appliance. 3 cv are suitable for shallow plowing (flower beds, ornamental garden); 5 cv is the minimum to comfortably work a large vegetable garden of 1000 to 2000 m².
Note also the speed of rotation of the strawberries which results: 200 rpm allow obtaining an excellent crumbling. The tiller of the ground is the best choice now.
Plant protection discs
Some models have plant protection discs. Located on either side of the strawberries, they protect the beds and the borders against false maneuvers; more generally all plants against unwanted uprooting. They clearly delimit the worked area in width: ideal for quality landscaping work.
Rear flap in action
It allows finishing work thanks to the rear “raisses”. In addition, it will protect you from flying stones or debris.
Transport wheel
If you opt for a motor hoe, prefer a model equipped with a transport wheel: appreciable comfort for moving the engine off (when you put it away, for example).
Tillers are motorized machines used for gardening. Their motor, electric or thermal, makes it possible to activate rotary cutters which have the mission of penetrating the ground and breaking the upper layer, also called “crust”. These devices are driven very simply, by a driver walking.
The hoe is controlled using a handlebar and control handles. The powerful rotary tiller, which penetrates and lifts the soil, is located under the engine. Motor milling cutters allow the machine to be “propelled” out of the ground. Finally, the transport wheel gives all its mobility to the machine: it is this wheel which supports the weight of the motor hoe.
Diagram of a motor hoe and its main components
In general, hoes are characterized by a number of gears. They thus offer several rotational speeds for the cutters, speeds directly adjustable from the handlebars and the two handles. This upper handlebar and its advancement handle are also similar to those found on motorcycles, hence the name “hoe” motorcycle.
Why use a tiller?
The purpose of using a tiller is to ventilate the soil in order to sow plants of all types. This aeration of the soil also allows nutrients and water (from precipitation and watering) to penetrate the earth.
The action of the hoe is therefore to turn the earth to prepare your soils before planting, whether in your beds or in your vegetable patch. It works the soil up to 25 cm deep and effectively improves your soil without having to use manual techniques that are both slow and difficult. In other words, the tiller prepares your soil to receive your plantations and contributes to the good health of your seedlings and other plants in the garden.
